Other times, that wall is quietly holding up your roof, your upstairs floor, or both — and removing it without the right design can be dangerous and expensive.

The short answer

If the wall is load-bearing, yes — you need a structural engineer. Load-bearing vs non-load-bearing: what's the difference?
